Teaching Philosophy
I believe my role, as a teacher, is to provide a learning environment to students that promote growth, learning, and self-responsibility. I believe using technology, inquiry and hands-on activities to enhance learning in the classroom is a major part of teaching to students.
Students have become very technologically savvy. As an educator, I believe it is important to use the various types of technology available to engage their interests in learning. By using the technology, you are giving students the opportunity to guide their own learning. If they are struggling with a concept, they can use the technology to help them gain a better understanding.
As a teacher, I believe you need to use inquiry in the classroom to help students discover the answers for themselves. By giving them this task of finding the answers versus being told the answers, students are taking responsibility for their own learning. Inquiry causes the teacher to step back and become a facilitator of discussions instead of the lecturer, allowing students to control the learning process.
Finally, I believe it is important to use hands-on activities to engage students. Students tend to learn more when given the opportunity to manipulate a tangible object over being lectured to. By giving the students tangible objects, they can use all their senses to help them to understand what is being taught to them and will help them to retain the material.
